To say that someone else is responsible for my life, my decisions, and/or my emotions is exactly what’s troubling our world. Not only is it unsettling, but there is no spiritual presence in this conviction. There are many ways we give our power away. Some of us give it to others – a loved one, a friend, or boss; while others give their power away to an institution – a company, or even something like the DSM-IV (the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).

Think about it, how does it feel when you are imprisoned by someone else’s beliefs or position, or better yet your own? What I hear most when I’m working with people all over the country is that they feel stuck, frustrated, and lost. This is because they have stopped listening to an inner voice that lives within their deepest heart. They have become dependent on what others have chosen or want for them, instead of what they want for themselves. Does this sound like familiar? Basically, we have all in some form or fashion abandoned our own inner truth for the approval or acceptance of someone or something else. So how do we change these reactions and beliefs?

First, we need to know that by nature we are deeply intuitive people whose core existence lies within our ability to know and experience our own power. Said differently, true power comes from when our heart space is open and we are able to access a higher divine source of strength and momentum without confusion or doubt. This area exists between the bottom of our throat and above our belly button and in between our shoulders. Not only does this place include our actual beating heart, but it also includes our soul’s voice and radiance.

In fact, it is true that when one begins to unlock and expand his or her heart space, things miraculously start to change. One way to increase this opening is to simply repeat out loud the “Ahhhh” sound from the center most part of your chest. The “Ahhhh” sound is a universal sound that opens the heart center of the human body. The more we allow ourselves to express this sound slowly and methodically the more adept we become at hearing our own soul’s voice. As a result, we stop discarding truths that we know are valid and we begin to live our lives with more love and joy.

Another tool that can aide in the return of our power is to complete one or both of the following sentences. “My beloved Universe (God, Spirit, Buddha), is it in my highest good to (for instance) take this job at Melbourne Electronics? Or, “My beloved Universe is it true, (for instance) that I’ll never be loved in my life? The goal is to identify what voice or belief is stopping you from moving forward in your life and then placing it in one or both of the two statements. The key is asking yourself:  Is it in your highest good or is it true…?  Then, with your eyes closed, listen to what your heart expresses. As you begin to listen more carefully with the ear of your heart, you slowly reclaim your inner power and become an example of Divine Presence.
